The weekend after Thanksgiving has always been a time of quiet reflection for me and my family. Fall is the perfect time to relax and enjoy family, yummy food, pumpkin pie and hot chocolate, while counting the numerous blessings of living in Ocean City.
I am thankful to live on the Eastern Shore. The summer months are filled with beaches, sun and fun. But Autumn will always be a hidden treasure. With mild days late into the year, long walks on the beach and quiet solitude help make the stress of day to day life roll off my shoulders. Ocean City has 10 miles of beautiful beaches, calling to be leisurely strolled along. My absolute favorite is Assateague National Park. The wild horses wander along the beach and it feels like my own private paradise.
The residents work tirelessly to help each other. My community celebrates the shopping season especially during Small Business Saturday. Our local community fosters and encourages the entrepreneurial spirit of the small business with multiple historic regions. I love strolling down Main Street in Berlin, MD. Our small town was named America’s Coolest Small Town in 2014 by Budget Travel.
Berlin not only has a dedicated citizenry and fan following (it grabbed more than 28 percent of the votes among the 15 finalists), but it’s also a truly spectacular place to visit or put down roots. Like the beautiful backdrops in the films Tuck Everlasting and The Runaway Bride? Thank Berlin, where both movies were shot. Ready for a getaway that includes Maryland’s awesome Ocean City beach and boardwalk and gorgeous Assateague Island? They’re just a few miles from Berlin’s downtown (a National Register Historic District), which plays host to fun events all year long, from the regular farmers market to one-of-a-kind bashes like the Berlin Fiddlers Convention, New Year’s fireworks, Victorian Christmas (complete with horse-drawn carriages), and even bathtub races! Whether you’re a beach lover, hiker, kayaker, bird watcher, or history aficionado, put Berlin on your list of small-town must-sees (in fact, put it at the top of your list—we just did!). – Budget Travel
My favorite day of the Fall season is the day after Cyber Monday. It is Giving Tuesday, an online giving event that provides nonprofits the opportunity to inspire the community. It brings charities, families, businesses, and people from around the shore together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity. On Nov. 28th, the community comes together to support and celebrate nonprofits in Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset Counties at www.shoregivesmore.org.
